This is an Advanced Practice Professional (APP) job opening.
Both qualified NP and PA applicants will be considered.

NPs are directed to apply to job # 254800 and PAs are directed to apply to job # 254801

A total of one (1), 1.0 FTE, Advanced Practice Professional (either NP or PA) will be hired to fill this job opening.

The Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, is currently seeking an Advanced Practice Provider for its Interventional Pulmonology Program.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

Coordination of Care and Quality Improvement

  • Maintain and update daily/weekly procedural log and patient list.
  • Participation in the following boards:
    • Thoracic Oncology Tumor board 
    • Multidisciplinary Airway Conference Meetings 
  • Coordination of care with Interventional Pulmonology staff (Interventional Pulmonology clinical specialist, scheduler, coordinator referral and outpatient nursing support).

Clinical work includes:

  • Perform basic bronchoscopic and  pleural procedures at bedside, Operating Room and the Medical Procedural Unit (MPU) after consultation and treatment plan review with Interventional Pulmonology attending. 
  • Inpatient consultation and follow-up
  • Present patients at multidisciplinary tumor board discussions
  • Pre-procedure History and Physicals and obtaining procedural consents
  • Patient education
  • Follow-up care post procedure in an outpatient setting

Procedural Work:

  • The APP will be trained and supervised by board-certified Interventional Pulmonology attendings,   Duties will include assisting in the operating room as well as independent beside and outpatient procedures.

Assisting in the Operating Room:

  • Obtain consent for elective outpatient and emergent cases (inpatient/outpatient)
  • Provide support of pre and postoperative care (history and physical exam, consents, pre and postoperative orders, discharge orders, or coordination of admission to inpatient service, etc.). 
  • Serve as liaison between OR room staff and Interventional Pulmonology Faculty for proper set up of equipment and tools for OR /MPU procedures, which will be performed by Interventional Pulmonology Attending
  • Bronchoscopy ? Airway surveillance/Bronchial alveolar lavage

Independent bedside and outpatient procedures:

  • Basic bronchoscopy (airway inspection)
  • Chest Ultrasonography 
  • Thoracentesis with pleural manometry 
  • Small bore chest tube insertion  
  • Chest Tube Removal  
  • Tunneled Pleural Catheter insertion and removal 
  • Tracheostomy management (change and removal)

NP:

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan. 
  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner program. 
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).  
  • Current DEA registration required 
  • Current AHA Approved BLS, ACLS 
  • Thoracic, Interventional Radiology or Interventional Pulmonology APP with a minimum 6-months experience in inpatient work
  • Procedural/procedural assist Experience with :
    • Flexible and Rigid Bronchoscopy
    • Endobronchial Ultrasound
    • Thoracentesis
    • Chest tube placement (small and large bore)
    • Tunneled Pleural Catheter placement and removal 
    • Pleuroscopy with Biopsy
    • Endobronchial valve placement and removal 
    • Bronchial stent placement/deployment and removal
    • Laser Tracheobronchoplasty
    • Bronchial Thermoplasty

PA:

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant  (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP. 
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA). 
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan. 
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required   
  • Current DEA registration required 
  • Current AHA approved BLS, ACLS 
  • Thoracic, Interventional Radiology or Interventional Pulmonology APP with a minimum 6-months experience in inpatient work
  • Procedural/procedural assist Experience with :

  • 2 years of recent experience (within the last 5 years) as an APP 
  • Experience managing patients with pulmonary conditions
  • Demonstrated ability to complete history and physical examinations; order appropriate diagnostic studies, synthesize information and make informed clinical decisions; develop appropriate care plans; and be responsive to patient and family preferences. 
  • Demonstrated excellent teaching abilities. 
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.  
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team.  
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments and manage a busy work environment. 
  • Ability to function independently and as a team member. 
  • Demonstrated communication and customer service excellence with patients, family, staff and physicians. 
  • The provider must demonstrate a high level of critical thinking and medical knowledge by using current medical information and scientific evidence for patient care. 
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate clinical care ideas across multiple patient care services and to communicate assertively as a patient advocate. 
  • Demonstrated ability to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles and sensitivity to diversity. 
  • Experience as participant in continuous quality improvement. 
  • Computer skills including, but not limited to electronic medical record documentation and electronic order entry. 
  • EPIC/MiChart experience a plus. 

Hours/Week:  40 
Day Shift, variable 10-12 hour shifts, including weekend shifts
Location:  University Hospital
