Job Description

An Allegheny County Assistant District Attorney performs a variety of duties associated with prosecuting criminal cases.  The position is in the Post Conviction and Appeals Division of the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office.  One central function of the District Attorney’s Office is to pursue justice during the prosecution of violators of criminal laws at all stages of the juvenile and adult court system. This includes appeals, and post-conviction, and federal habeas corpus proceedings.  Once a defendant has been convicted of a crime and sentenced, he or she has the right to file an appeal, asking the state or federal appellate courts to examine the trial and determine whether the defendant was properly convicted. Attorneys in the Post-Conviction Relief Act unit appear in the Pennsylvania Superior and Commonwealth Courts, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and in the federal Western District of Pennsylvania, Third Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. The selected candidate cannot maintain a private practice and must become a resident of Allegheny County.

Licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania
