Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is seeking a passionate Assistive Technology Center Coordinator to champion accessibility and inclusivity in technology. Reporting to the EIT Accessibility Manager, you will play a pivotal role in identifying and addressing barriers to digital access for individuals with disabilities. This includes providing technical support, training, workshops, and guidance to faculty, staff, and students to ensure compliance with accessibility laws, university policies, and best practices. By fostering an inclusive digital environment, you will make a meaningful impact on the university community and contribute to advancing equal access to education and resources for all.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Assistive Technology Services: Conducts Evaluation to match students with disabilities to appropriate resources, accessible technologies, adaptive furniture and equipment, and alternate accessible formats. Coordinates student use of assistive technology/adaptive equipment. Provides instruction and training to students in the use of adaptive equipment and assistive technologies. Assists in training faculty, staff, and ATC employees on use of assistive technology. identify and utilize equipment and applications specific to students' functional limitations. Meet with faculty and staff to provide technical assistance on appropriate technology to meet accessibility requirements. Works with testing services to ensure proper implementation of assistive technologies on assessments. Responsible for tracking inventory and scheduling maintenance of assistive technologies, adaptive furniture, and equipment (hardware and software) in the Accessible Technology Center. Checks equipment in/out, clears for next student, and maintains list of equipment loans. May assist EIT Accessibility Manager with accessibility review and testing of websites, software, and other technologies to include scheduling meetings with vendors and university partners.
  • Alternate Media Production: Processes requests from students for alternate accessible format services. Communicates with students, instructors, vendors, publishers, and other organizations as necessary to obtain needed information and materials. Assists EIT Accessibility Manager and Alternative Text Production Specialist in establishing and monitoring alternative text production schedule to ensure timely production and delivery of texts and materials in an alternate accessible format. Scan and prepare exams/assessments, textbooks, and other documents to produce alternate accessible format materials, including Braille, e-text, large print, and audio formats. Assist in document remediation and preparation of accessible alternative formats.
  • Department Support: Evaluates and assesses alternate format production workflows, identifies best practices, and makes process improvement recommendations. Maintains and reports data and statistics regarding requests for assistive technology services, accessible alternate formats, and accessibility reviews of software and other technologies. Assists EIT Accessibility Manager with purchase requisitions and other administrative tasks. Coordinates and schedules meetings, appointments, and workshops for EIT Accessibility Manager. Works with the EIT Accessibility Manager and the Alternative Text Production Specialist to implement accessibility best practices and operational improvement strategies. May assist with content creation for ATC website, guidance on alternative format best practices, and development/facilitation of training, workshops, and outreach to appropriate campus and community partners. Maintains current knowledge of legislation, developing trends, and best practices through attendance at conferences and workshops and monitoring industry related news and publications.
  • Supervision: Assists EIT Accessibility Manger in hiring, training, and supervising part-time employees involved in alternative text production and other related tasks. Assists in training, development, and monitoring of part-time employees on day-to-day activities. Provides leadership by example, exhibiting excellent customer service and student support skills to continuously improve knowledge and abilities of team members. Assists in identifying staff training needs and opportunities, provides staff training and mentoring.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with an associate degree and two years professional experience in a related discipline or a combination of education and experience totaling four years.

Preferred Qualifications
Three years related experience in educational technology, disability services, assistive technology, or a comparable field. Experience evaluating, utilizing, and training others in current assistive technology and accessible features embedded within technology, including Microsoft, Google, and Apple accessibility tools, Adobe Acrobat Pro, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, screen reader/magnification, and other assistive technologies to a campus wide audience. Experience coordinating alternative text requests and producing alternative formats to include, contacting publishers, scanning and conversion of print-based material into accessible formats such as Braille and PDF/UA. One year of experience supervising and developing teams. Experience working with students with disabilities, preferably in higher education.

  • Knowledge of legal mandates, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as well as compliance standards regarding assistive technology and web accessibility as outlined in Section 508 and the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
  • Knowledge of disability etiquette
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in accessible technology and accessible document production
  • Knowledge of appropriate use of assistive technology in testing and assessments

  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and other office applications
